"Well, look who decided to grace us with her presence," Amy Sutton said with an indignant toss of her head when Jessica sped into cheerleading practice in the gym the next afternoon.

Jessica ignored Amy, laid her books down on the bottom row of bleachers, and shook her hair back from her face. Then she took a deep breath and joined the other girls on the gym floor.

Practice lasted an hour, and when it was over Jessica rushed out of the gym with barely a wave for the rest of the squad.

At the dance studio, Jessica had a private lesson with Mr. Krezenski. She worked harder than she'd ever dreamed she could. And a strange thing happened. For the first time, she passed the point at which she wanted to collapse with exhaustion and found a new strength that carried her on.

"I saw you and your sister on the television news last night," Mr. Krezenski said when Jessica's lesson was over and she was drying her face with a towel.

Jessica was still struggling to get her breath. She braced herself for the inevitable criticism.

"The resemblance between the two of you is amazing," Mr. Krezenski went on in his peculiar, formal way. "But it is obvious that your opinions differ greatly."

Jessica knew Mr. Krezenski was going to take Elizabeth's side, and she felt her temper starting to flare. "You don't think I should enter the pageant?" she asked evenly.

Mr. Krezenski smiled. "My opinion does not matter, Miss Wakefield. It is my duty to instruct you in the dance; nothing less, nothing more."

Relieved, Jessica whispered a "thank you" and headed for the changing room.
